It's "National Unmarried and Single Americans Week"

Here's an annual celebration that I bet you didn’t know about: This week (Sept 16-22) is "National Unmarried and Single Americans (USA) Week."  Although you're unlikely to find a Hallmark card for it, it's celebrated the 3rd week of September every year since 1980.

"Celebrating" being single? Really? Yes, times are changing. Demographics are shifting and the nature of modern relationships is being re-defined. The institution of marriage remains alive and well, but men and women no longer feel pressured by social norms to get married at a young age - some maybe at all. In fact, more Americans are spending a greater percentage of their lives unmarried than married.

Here are some eye opening numbers from the US Census Bureau (2011):
  • 102 million adults (over 18) in the US are not married. That's 44% of all adults in the U.S.
  • 33 million people in the U.S. who lived alone. They comprised 28% of all households, up from just 17% in 1970.
  • More than one third of voters in the 2008 presidential election were unmarried. One of the largest groups of non-voters is unmarried women.
Regardless of whether Unmarried and Single Americans Week is actively and broadly celebrated yet or not, the media seems to be gaining more interest in unmarried people in terms of their steadily growing numbers (particularly single women) and their economic impact. _______________________________________________________________________________
"Single" is an independent documentary film that explores the growth of the unmarried population and the new challenges in finding and maintaining a lasting relationship in today's crazy world.  The game has dramatically changed. Should you have a plan?
